Which Job Is Actually Yours?

Electrical panel repair

One breaker failed, a neutral worked loose, a lug burned. The board itself is fine. Electrical panel repair takes about two hours and costs a few hundred dollars. Always worth ruling out before anyone sells you a replacement.

Electrical panel replacement

The board is obsolete, full, or a make insurers refuse. Amperage stays where it is, so nothing changes at the meter and the utility only pulls and resets it for the day. Breaker panel replacement is the entire job.

An electrical panel upgrade

Amperage goes up. New conductors, usually a new meter base, and a formal request to Toronto Hydro before a date can be booked. An electrical panel upgrade is the long one, for reasons the process section below spells out.

Electrical panel first, wiring second. We do not open circuits that are working.

Outdated Electrical Panels in Toronto Homes

Outdated electrical panels turn up constantly in Toronto homes built before 1990. Electrical panels from that era fail in four ways, and each one fails differently.

Fuse boxes

When a fuse blows twice in a week, somebody eventually puts in a bigger one. Now the wire is protected at 30 amps and rated for 15. That mismatch is one of the ordinary causes of electrical fires in older housing, and it is why fused panels cannot be brought to current code.

Federal Pioneer Stab-Lok

The breaker looks tripped but the contacts stay closed. The fault stays live on the circuit, which is where electrical shock comes from on an appliance chassis or a metal box. There is no repair for this. The board goes.

60-amp boards

Sized for a 1955 house with a stove and a radio. Nothing about limited electrical capacity here is fixable with better breakers.

Full boards

No spare spaces, two wires jammed under one lug, tandem breakers in a panel not listed for them.

Toronto homeowners usually find out about outdated panels the awkward way, during an insurance renewal or a week before closing.

When to Stop Waiting

  • Breakers trip when the dryer and the microwave run together.
  • Lights dim every time the air conditioner starts.
  • The cover feels warm. Heat at a connection is what precedes electrical fires, so warm is not a small thing.
  • A receptacle or an appliance gives you a shock. Missing grounds are a live electrical shock risk on anything metal they feed.
  • You still have fuses.
One of these means book an assessment. Two or more means electrical panel replacement, and waiting only adds risk.

Electrical Capacity for Modern Electrical Needs

Modern electrical needs look nothing like 1975. EV chargers pull 40 to 60 amps on their own. Heat pumps, induction ranges and hot tubs each want a dedicated circuit. A heat pump plus two chargers will overload a 100-amp electrical service without trying.

EV chargers Heat pumps Induction ranges Hot tubs

We size electrical capacity with a load calculation under the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, not by rule of thumb. Before quoting anything we work out what the service can carry. If your electrical needs stop at one charger on a gas-heated house, limited electrical capacity can often be handled with a load-sharing device instead, for a fraction of the money and with no request to the utility at all.

Most residential panel upgrades in Toronto trace back to the same three things: a home addition, a basement suite, a car in the driveway. Electrical panel installation for a home addition runs on the same load calculation as everything else.

What Toronto Hydro Requires

This is where panel upgrade timelines come from, and it is worth reading before anyone takes a deposit from you. Panels, meters and masts carry electrical services into the house, but the utility owns everything upstream of your meter, so the sequence belongs to them.

  1. The Service Upgrade Request goes in through Toronto Hydro's online form. We assemble the documents so it does not bounce back.
  2. A representative contacts you within ten business days to confirm scope, and may ask for a design pre-payment before design work begins.
  3. Toronto Hydro issues a Job Quotation or an Offer to Connect. On a complex site this takes up to sixty days.
  4. You sign and return it with payment.
  5. They finish the design, pull their permits, order material.
  6. We prepare the site: conductors, mast, meter base, clear access to the equipment.
  7. Toronto Hydro does its own construction, including anything on the road allowance.
  8. ESA inspects and issues connection authorization.
  9. Toronto Hydro runs a final site inspection against its Conditions of Service.
  10. Toronto Hydro upgrades the electrical service, roughly five business days later.

The design pre-payment is refundable if you decide not to go ahead, minus whatever was already spent assessing the job.

The Faster Lane Most Toronto Homes Qualify For

2–3 weeks instead of 4–8

Toronto Hydro now publishes real-time appointment availability for simple overhead requests at 120/240 volts up to 200 amps. That covers a large share of detached and semi-detached houses in the city.

If yours qualifies, you skip the design and quotation loop and book against a live calendar. Four to eight weeks turns into two to three. Underground services and anything past 200 amps still take the long route, and service upgrades on a shared transformer can take longer again.

We work out which lane you are in during the assessment, before you have spent anything.

How Much Does Panel Upgrade Cost

JobPrice
Fuse box to breaker panel, same amperage$1,600 to $2,200
Federal Pioneer replacement, same amperage$1,800 to $2,600
100-amp to 200-amp$3,200 to $4,400
60-amp to 200-amp$3,800 to $5,200
200-amp to 400-amp$6,500 to $9,500
Sub-panel off an existing 200-amp board$900 to $1,800

That covers the board, the breakers, the labour, the ESA filing and the inspection. Toronto Hydro bills its share of the electrical service separately, and we tell you the number before you sign.

The final price for electrical panel upgrade get priced after we see the board, the meter and the service entrance. Extra electrical work found once the cover is off, a damaged circuit or a missing ground, gets quoted on the spot rather than buried in the final invoice.

Professional Electrical Panel Upgrades Across the GTA

We bring professional electrical panel upgrades to Toronto homeowners in Old Toronto, Scarborough, Etobicoke, North York, East York, York, Vaughan, Markham and Pickering. Homeowners across the GTA book electrical services through the same intake, and Toronto homeowners get the same crews and the same pricing at either end of the city.

Electrical Panel Upgrade FAQ

?Do I have to rewire the house?
No. The work replaces the board and its breakers, not the cable in your walls. Existing circuits move onto new breakers. Only damaged or ungrounded ones need extra electrical work.
?How long does electrical panel upgrade take in Toronto?
On site, 4 to 6 hours for same-amperage work and 6 to 8 for an amperage change. Start to finish, two to three weeks if you qualify for real-time booking, four to eight weeks if the request goes through design and quotation.
?How much does your electric panel upgrade cost?
Your electric panel upgrade costs $3,200 to $4,400 for a 100-amp to 200-amp change in most Toronto homes. Same-amperage breaker panel replacement runs $1,600 to $2,200.
?Who deals with the utility?
We do. XB Electric files with ESA and submits the request, and you are never on the phone with Toronto Hydro. They will not energize electrical services until ESA issues connection authorization, which is why the last step is theirs and not ours.
?Do EV chargers force an upgrade?
Not always. EV chargers on a 200-amp service usually fit as they are. EV chargers on 60 or 100 amps usually trigger something, though a load-sharing device is sometimes enough to avoid service upgrades entirely.
?Will my insurer accept a same-amperage swap?
Yes. Insurers want a modern breaker panel, not a specific amperage. Electrical panel replacement at the same rating clears almost every request we see written against outdated panels.
